History
Gaston Berger, Director of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, created the first IAE in 1955. Institutions of a new kind inspired by the American model, the IAE offer management courses attached to universities.
The origin of IAE dates back to the 1950s. At the time, in France, there was no management option within the university. In the United States, on the other hand, the economic boom was fueled by batches of engineers and managers from the best Business schools attached to universities. In the midst of reconstruction, France was sorely lacking executives as the 30-year post-war boom began. In 1955, Gaston Berger, Director of Higher education at the Ministry of National Education, then wanted to renew higher education and project a university open to business, inspired by the American model. He thus created the first IAE under the name of IPA (Institutes of Business Preparation). Aix-en-Provence, Bordeaux, Dijon, Rennes and Toulouse then became the first institutions of this new kind, offering management courses attached to universities.
The first IAE were first the institutes of a single degree, the CAAE (Certificate of Aptitude for Business Administration - now Master's degree MAE), with a pioneering positioning on the "dual competence". The purpose of this degree was to give management competence to engineers and graduate students of the Faculties of Law, Letters and Sciences, mainly. The flagship diploma of the IAE, designed in such a way that it can be followed in one year in evening classes, it is a French mini-Master of Business Administration: teaching is based on the case method, an innovative approach at the time.
The development of IAE has been made possible by a number of collective assets. One of the most important, for most of them, is the fact that they have gradually acquired, within Universities, a derogatory status (Article 713-9 of the Education Code) allowing a certain autonomy of action, with a specific board of directors whose President is a company director.
For almost 20 years, the CAAE has been the unique and successful core of most IAE. This degree, which is part of the history of the IAE, has gained recognition at the national level, both at the level of students and at the level of companies.
The 70s are the years of the explosion of the IAE: we are witnessing a diversification of the training offered in the IAE. The increase in the training offer and a significant need for managers are reflected in an influx of candidates.
The IAE grow by developing on their own resources (apprenticeship tax and executive training) with in particular the creation of partnerships and training internationally oriented.
The entry into the XXIst century coincides with the transition to the LMD in 2005, the IAE have perfectly integrated this evolution of the structure of higher education by creating new masters in line with international standards and which have since proven their success, whether in terms of attractiveness or professional integration.
In 2004, faithful to their pioneering spirit, the IAE will be the first to develop together a quality approach within the University through a certification in order to guarantee both good operating criteria but also a permanent attention of the various actors of the IAE.
In 2014, aware of their attractiveness, both among students and socio-economic backgrounds, the IAE wanted to consolidate their notoriety at the national level by working on their brand identity. The National Association of IAE was therefore renamed "IAE FRANCE" and a national campaign "Do you have the IAE spirit?" was launched in order to gain visibility and unite the entire community around common values.
Today, the Network has 35 IAE, with singular stories in their own context, university and regional.
